Chipped Away, 2013

Styrofoam, Acrylic Paint, Variable Dimensions

Styrofoam is carved with a hot string tied to both hands of a welding machine in order to achieve a certain form. After the sculpture was completed, I discarded it and continued with the pieces that were chipped away. The remaining pieces after carving started dispersing around the empty square of 70 x 70 cm, as it was the base of the prior form.

When a stone is dropped in still water, one can observe circular ripples that form and propagate outwards, while the stone would have already disappeared in the depths. Similarly, these remnants are the effect and the result of the extracting action. What is presented is the form surrounding what was intended for presentation in the first place: the negative space, a space left for the imagination.
